How To Use the Activity & Habit Log To Track Your Favorite Hobbies

While it’s easy to sideline leisure activities and hobbies, we know that the real goal of productivity is to free up time for the things you truly enjoy. These everyday victories of habit and routine are worth celebrating. Taking the time to record them not only helps you retain the joy and satisfaction of your accomplishments but will also sustain your motivation and give you greater insight into how these practices build you up.

We created the Activity & Habit Log to provide an easy-to-use structure for recording and reflecting on the experiences that matter most to you.

Our goal is to help you embrace the joy of the everyday activities that build and sustain your well-being. We carefully designed each spread for flexibility—allowing you to track a variety of interests and hobbies. Whether you’re detailed and methodical or flexible and creative, this log will give you a springboard for documenting, revisiting, and fostering the activities you value.

Getting Started

The Activity & Habit Log is divided into four sections, each with a page for ideas, room for multiple entries, and a summary page. Use each section for a particular time frame or to track multiple activities. Use the content pages at the beginning of the log to create a roadmap of your entries as you fill them in, and consider noting other key pages you’ll want to flip to easily.

Before you dive into filling up your log, take some time to set a few personal goals in the provided goal spread. You may want to create big-picture objectives or anchor each goal to a section.

Setting goals gives you something clear to aim for, providing awareness and joy as small, everyday steps propel you toward your objectives. Give yourself clarity and purpose by specifying the underlying reason for each goal, and write down high-level action steps that can help you accomplish each one.

Consider how your goals might guide your use of this log. Do you want to watch more classic films? Use each section to designate a different quarter of the year. Or perhaps you want to improve on a specific skill or craft like pottery. Use each section to categorize your projects by type (think plates, cups, pitchers, and sculptural pieces).

About Each Section

1. Ideas

Compile resources or recommendations on your ideas pages. Jot down that book your coworker raved about or a new restaurant you saw on a Top 100 list. Including the reason you added this idea will help you make informed decisions later about which activity you want to tackle next.

2. Entries

Start at the top in the header area. Think of it as your title and record your most important details here. When filling out a category and type, consider how you can build a hierarchy of information that will help you navigate through the entries.

The category will likely be a broad descriptor, and the type will be more specific. For example, if you’re testing out different coffees, you might specify whether a coffee is a blend or single origin in the category section, and list the location in the type section.

List any other info you want to record in the details section. Think context (what pan did you use while cooking?), characteristics (what was the temperature outside when you went on that hike?), or metrics (did this movie receive any nominations or awards?) that might enhance your entry.

We’ve provided three blocks for rating each entry. The first two are left blank to give you flexibility, and the third asks for an overall rating.

The last area on the entry page—which includes space for you to note anything you liked, disliked, or found noteworthy—allows space for personal reflection. What stands out most about this project or activity?

Page two of this spread leaves plenty of room for notes and sketches. Maybe you want to draw each bird you identify, record the ingredients for a recipe, or include quotes from each book you read—it's completely up to you.

3. Summary

Once you’ve completed a section, take some time for reflection in the summary spread. What patterns or observations stand out most to you? Documenting your most noteworthy entries can help you recall your successes, and noting incomplete tasks or to-dos can help you plan better for next time.

We've also provided a dedicated section to reflect on your goals. Look back at your original intentions to understand what goals are realistic for next time and celebrate all you have accomplished.
